Community native planting day - Whitechapel Reserve.

On Saturday September 6th we invite Queenstowners to Whitechapel Reserve to kick off our spring planting season.

The hard work of digging holes will already be done and the job on the day will be to get native plants into their forever homes.

As is tradition, we will have a yummy morning tea care of our friends at the Hilton Hotel and a BBQ lunch will be provided.

We have been planting at this site since 2015 and this spring the total number of plants will reach over 26,000 planted in the past 10 years. Whitechapel Reserve is an important grey shrubland planting site where we plant key species such as coprosma, olearia, corokia and kowhai making it a favoured habitat for birds, lizards and also native moths and butterflies.
So we are delighted to be teaming up with the Whakatipu Wildlife Trust to welcome NZ butterfly expert Jacqui Knight who will give us a talk over BBQ lunch about our native pollinators. We are looking forward to learning more about the native species we can be planting in our own gardens to help our native moths and butterflies to thrive.
There will be conservation activities happening for kids happening later in the morning making it a fantastic day out for the whole family and a brilliant way to get involved in NZ Conservation Week.
